This piece is my artistic rendition of the Shoshone tale of “How Coyote Stole Fire.”
The story goes something like this: Long ago, winter made people very sad and afraid, for in the winter many died because of the cold and food was scarce. Coyote was one of the wisest animals and a friend of the people. One morning, he heard one of the women in the village say, “If we just had a piece of the Sun to carry with us through the winter it would end the great suffering of our people.”
Coyote knew a place far away on a mountain top where three Fire Spirits lived. They tended a piece of the sun but guarded it with their lives because they did not want human beings to have it. He set out to the mountain of the Fire Spirits to steal their secret and help the human beings. He waited for the perfect opportunity and stole a flaming stick. The Fire Spirits pursued him but he ran like the wind and when they caught up to him he flung the fire to his other animal friends who helped save the fire. So, thanks to Coyote and his other animal friends, human beings were able to keep a piece of the sun to keep them warm in the winter.

Nestled close to the Gallatin River, we’re blessed with its pristine waters brimming with elusive brown trout. My husband, an avid fisherman, holds his secret spots close, relishing the thrill of the chase. This trout embodies my artistic tribute to his memorable 16-inch catch in the Gallatin River. "In the Garden" captures a quiet moment as two sandhill cranes stroll gracefully through the grass and flower blossoms, their long legs moving with elegant ease. These majestic birds, known for their lifelong pair bonds and elaborate courtship dances, often forage together in open fields or gardens, searching for seeds, insects, and small creatures. Sandhill cranes can live over 20 years in the wild, and their presence brings a since of peace and timelessness to any scene. This piece reflects their quiet companionship and the serene beauty of nature when we pause long enough to notice.

Creating this piece in February, I chose to name it “Snow Moon,” a name given by Native American tribes due to the heavy snowfall often associated with this month (at least in Montana). The name is deeply rooted in their traditions, as they used moon phases to track the changing seasons and weather patterns.
