CONTEMPORARY MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE ART BY MONTANA ARTIST

CAPTURING THE MOMENT WITH PAPER & STUFF

CAPTURING THE MOMENT WITH PAPER & STUFF
If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind contemporary art that brings depth and meaning to your space, you’re in the right place. I create original mixed media collage art—a distinctive form of contemporary art inspired by Montana’s landscapes, animals, birds and stories. Each piece blends painted papers, natural elements, and layered textures, inviting you to pause, reflect, and discover something personal. I believe art can heal, uplift, and connect, and I craft every collage to spark joy and meaning for its new home.
As a Montana artist, I’ve developed a recognizable style through decades of experience and inspiration. In my studio in the heart of Montana, I hand-paint and cut paper, assembling each collage with natural elements like feathers, wildflowers, grasses, and porcupine quills—materials that carry texture, history, and a deep sense of place. Each work is created with care and offered with a quiet blessing, so it carries not just beauty, but presence.
Whether you’re an art collector, interior designer, or simply drawn to meaningful work, I invite you to explore my mixed media collages. Let the art speak to you—and see what it reveals.

This piece is my artistic rendition of the Shoshone tale of “How Coyote Stole Fire.” The story goes something like this:
Long ago, winter made people very sad and afraid, for in the winter many died because of the cold and food was scarce. Coyote was one of the wisest animals and a friend of the people. One morning, he heard one of the women in the village say, “If we just had a piece of the Sun to carry with us through the winter it would end the great suffering of our people.”
Coyote knew a place far away on a mountain top where three Fire Spirits lived. They tended a piece of the sun but guarded it with their lives because they did not want human beings to have it. He set out to the mountain of the Fire Spirits to steal their secret and help the human beings. He waited for the perfect opportunity and stole a flaming stick. The Fire Spirits pursued him but he ran like the wind and when they caught up to him he flung the fire to his other animal friends who helped save the fire. So, thanks to Coyote and his other animal friends, human beings were able to keep a piece of the sun to keep them warm in the winter.

"I was immediately drawn to Shirley's unique style of combining watercolored paper with other carefully curated materials to create beautiful works of art. Her work delights the eye and inspires feelings and one finds a true appreciation of the depth, thought and talent in her compilations. Each of her pieces tells a story and Shirley attaches a beautifully written note with materials used, inspiration for the work and the love that emanates from the process. I absolutely loved representing her paintings and was always excited to see what she would bring in the gallery next! " AG, Gallery Owner, Montana
"We just received our third original of Shirley’s artwork. Two of pieces were commissioned subjects that thrill us and make us smile every time we see them. The character, humor, creativity, and beauty of this art is almost unbeatable. We are so happy to add our new piece to our growing collection of wall hangings, mugs, and cards. Our main problem is that the cards are almost too wonderful to use." TLB & HJB, Private Collector, Michigan
My husband and I currently own four stunningly beautiful pieces of Shirley’s art, one of which is a commissioned piece of our baby girl (dog), Alli. Unknown to me, she timed the delivery as a surprise for my birthday. To say that I was deeply touched to the very depth of my soul by the incredibly beautiful piece AND her thoughtfulness would be an understatement! Clearly, her heart and soul goes into every piece she creates… and to the one fortunate enough to own any piece she has created, you feel that every time you look at it!" LR, Private Collector, Utah
